Top Four Benefits of Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

Happy dog days of summer! If you’re like me, this season has been jam packed with outdoor extravaganzas, quality time with loved ones, and a ton of good food. But all of that on top of triple digit heat? It’s time for some serious chillaxing. Enter Roman chamomile essential oil.

Known for its cooling properties, people have used to Roman chamomile for millennia. Recent laboratory studies have even shown its potential to kill bacteria, fungus, and viruses, making it a safe and gentle alternative for mild skin inflammation (to soothe that sunburn). Because it helps with muscle contractions, it can provide relief both externally (for your sore shoulders after pulling those stadium chairs down from the storage unit) and internally (to make up for the nachos you ate at that barbeque where you sat in said stadium chairs… and acquired said sunburn).

So take a deep breath and put your feet up. Here are four fabulous benefits of Roman chamomile essential oil and how you can use it to treat yourself after a summer well lived!

Eases Stress

Roman chamomile promotes relaxation and can help relieve anxiety. One of the best and easiest ways to use it is to place five drops into your palms, rub your palms together, then inhale that sweet chamomile aroma. By taking a moment to center yourself, you’re practicing the self-care that will keep you healthy and content. Need a quick dose of stress relief? Simply sniff Roman chamomile from the bottle to help calm frayed nerves.

Promotes Sleep

Just as it helps soothe stress, Roman chamomile can help you fall asleep. If you have a diffuser, you can use it beside your bed, or you can rub 1-2 drops into your temples (dilute with a carrier oil like coconut oil if you have sensitive skin). If the aroma is too strong, mix 1-2 drops with coconut oil and massage it into your feed. Wanna get fancy? Make yourself a relaxation spray of witch hazel, 10 drops each of Roman chamomile and lavender, and 5 drops of wild orange in a small spray bottle. Spritz your sheets, and enjoy a restful night of sleep.

Relieves Skin Irritation

Sunburn, acne, bruises, eczema, scratches, diaper rash, cracked nipples--you name it, Roman chamomile can help. Its antibacterial and antiinflammatory properties can help relieve minor skin irritation. Try a homemade bath bomb: Mix baking soda (8 oz.), citric acid (4 oz.), corn starch (4 oz), Epsom salts (4 oz.) , water (¾ tsp.), Roman chamomile and lavender essential oils (2 tsp. each) and almond oil (2.5 tsp.). Let the mixture dry in a mold for 24 hours, then enjoy that bath time! For cuts, scrapes, and angry pimples, apply directly to the affected area skin using a cotton ball. If your skin is sensitive, dilute the oil with a carrier oil like coconut. Speed healing of a sunburn and prevent peeling with a hydrating mist that contains chamomile essential oil.

Soothes an Upset Tummy

Feeling nauseated? A few deep inhalation of Roman chamomile oil has been shown to help relieve stomach discomfort. You can also massage 1-2 drops into your temples (use carrier oil if sensitive). For digestive issues like gas or indigestion, chamomile tea can help relax muscle contractions, particularly in the stomach and intestinal muscles. You can also give yourself a good tummy rub with 5 drops of oil. For additional relief, combine Roman chamomile with ginger, peppermint and lavender oil in a diffuser.
